Why we invested

Particula aligns with our thesis that tokenization will not scale without trust. By building independent, automated risk ratings for tokenized real-world assets, Particula reduces due diligence friction and enables institutional participation at scale. It represents the pragmatic, standard driven side of Web3 we actively seek to support.

Timm’s path to blockchain started long before Particula. In 2016, a college friend insisted Ethereum was the future; in 2018, a stranger at a party yelled “buy Bitcoin” in his face; in 2020, his best friend made a fortune in the last bull cycle. Only then did he take the space seriously. While working as an auditor at KPMG, he read The Future is Decentralized and became absorbed by how blockchain could reshape capital markets.

He quickly moved into advising banks and asset managers on digital asset adoption. He helped tokenize gold, build decentralized banking infrastructure, and navigate financial market regulation. In conversations with institutional clients, a pattern emerged: poor data quality, low transparency, and real uncertainty about risk in tokenized assets.

Traditional rating agencies, even the largest ones, were applying legacy methodologies and “simply had no clue.” No more information was needed; this was Timm’s problem to solve.

Particula exists to rebuild ratings for a tokenized world. Timm and his co-founders believe assessments of risk should be transparent, real-time, and usable directly on-chain by contracts and institutions. Particula is building native blockchain infrastructure for ratings, shifting incentives so issuers are compensated for data and ratings are paid for through actual usage, enabling safer lending, borrowing, and allocation in digital asset markets.
